San Bernardino, CA – Stater Bros., with stores in Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake, is reporting increased profits for the quarter ending December 25, when compared to the same period in 2010.

The supermarket chain — which operates 167 Southern California stores — reports its quarterly profits increased from 2.8 million in 2010 to $9 million in 2011. Customer visits increased by about one million, according to the media release issued from the San Bernardino headquarters.

Stater Bros. Markets traces its beginnings back to a small grocery store on West Yucaipa Boulevard in Yucaipa. Twin brothers Cleo and Leo Stater purchased the original Stater Bros. Market with a $600 down payment and opened it for business on August 17, 1936.

Today, Stater Bros. is the largest privately owned supermarket chain in Southern California.
