Mountain Communities – There are reports of black ice, rocks and other debris on mountain roadways.

The California Highway Patrol and CalTrans have been kept busy with reports of accidents and even a massive boulder than landed in lanes near Rimforest about 6:15 a.m. this morning. The boulder was reported blocking lanes on Highway 18 east of the stoplight at Lake Gregory Drive and the junction of Highway 189.

One official estimated the boulder to be about 12-feet wide and 8-feet tall and it took CalTrans crews a while to get the rock off the roadway.

CalTrans spokesperson Terri Kasinga reports there were no injuries or damaged vehicles when the boulder rolled down the side of the mountain onto the highway.

Meanwhile,  black ice was reported at several spots on various roadways including on Highway 38 near Jenks Lake Road that resulted in multiple vehicles getting stuck.

CalTrans reports they cindered the area all night long and continue to respond to “trouble” spots.
