Twin Peaks, CA – The Harbaugh brothers will be at the Super Bowl. So will Twin Peaks!
Coach Jim Harbaugh of the San Francisco 49ers and his older brother Coach John Harbaugh, of the Baltimore Ravens, will face off in Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans on February 3. And sometime in the second quarter, the Volkswagen commercial filmed in Twin Peaks in December 2012 is scheduled to air.
For the first time in Super Bowl history, brothers will be coaching opposing teams for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The 49ers earned their way to New Orleans by beating the Atlanta Falcons 28-24. The Ravens will make the trip thanks to a 28-13 victory over the New England Patriots.
On Thanksgiving 2012, the brothers and their teams met, with the Ravens topping the 49ers 16-6.
While the two coaching brothers angle will get a lot of press between now and Super Bowl XLVII, a lot of media attention will focus on the commercials — especially the 2013 60-second VW commercial filmed December 7 in Twin Peaks.
A VW spokesperson indicated in a media release that the firm’s Super Bowl commercial last February resulted in a 45 percent increase in unique visitors to VW.COM.
Media speculation is that the 2013 commercial won’t utilize the Star Wars dogs and kid concept. However, ROTWNEWS was on scene when the commercial was being filmed in Twin Peaks and was told the 2013 VW Beetle convertible will be this year’s Super Bowl star.
The Twin Peaks portion of the commercial involves the use of Mountain High Market, Twin Peaks Auto Service and other adjacent businesses. The parking lot at the Masonic Temple was full of cars and equipment including the star of the commercial, a black 2013 VW Beetle convertible, a Minnesota State Trooper unit, snow making equipment from Glacier Ice Company and a water truck provided by GM Excavating of Running Springs.
During the actual filming, members of the production crew declined to provide more than sketchy details but ROTWNEWS learned the occupants of the 2013 VW Beetle convertible were enjoying having the top down while heading to the ski resorts and put on their ski masks to stay warm. When they got to Mountain High Market one of the occupants went into the store to pick up supplies “forgetting” he had on a black ski mask which triggered a response to the scene by the state trooper.
The 2013 VW Beetle used in the commercial has a special feature allowing skis to fit inside the vehicle from the dashboard to the trunk so they are not visible from outside the vehicle.
