Young Eagles Soar at Big Bear Airport

By Susan A. Neufeld

Big Bear City,CA –  The second Saturday of every month, the Young Eagles program takes off at Big Bear Airport. The free flight program is open to young people (ages 8-17) and is sponsored by the Big Bear Pilot’s Association.

Flights are offered — May 13, June 10, July 8, August 12 and September 9 — between 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. — with parental permission required.

The Young Eagles program was started by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA)  in an effort to stimulate interest in aviation for young people,

The children are offered a free airplane ride around the Big Bear area, by pilots from the Pilot’s Association.

The Big Bear Pilot’s Association has run the program for several years and has flown thousands of children.

Each child is given a preflight review of the basics of flight and the main parts of an airplane prior to the flight. No appointments are necessary, but each child must be accompanied by a parent or adult who must sign a release of liability for the child and can then take pictures of the new Young Eagle after their flight.

For further information on this program call Roger Schmidt at (909) 547-0832.

The Barnstorm Restaurant also happens to be sponsoring a pancake breakfast — between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. — that includes pancakes,  eggs, and sausage

The cost is $7.50 per plate.

The breakfast’s are available the second Saturday of each month through September.
